I have been swimming since I was 10 years old. I had seen this book in a bookstore but when I thumbed through it, I didn't like that it didn't have too many pictures. This year, I've wanted to improve my fitness by swimming and I immediately noticed that my stroke was SLOOOOOW. I went out and bought a book on swimming but it didn't help me much, although it did motivate me to swim for fitness.
Oh, and don't fret about the lack of pictures. Boy, was I wrong. I haven't finished the book, and when I do, I know that my stroke is going to be even more efficient. The book explains very, very well how to swim which is perfect for a swimming book because pictures don't move. I'm totally, totally immersed in learning this method because it simply works. I'm very comfortable in the water and I have done the front crawl/freestyle stroke, the back stroke, the breast stroke but not very efficiently.
After just reading the first 5 chapters, my stroke improved immediately. I totally recommend this book. I couldn't believe how slow I was. I decided to buy the best selling book on Amazon.com for swimming, and TADA.
Be prepared to do the drills merely reading the book will not be enough. It is obvious that the author spent years thinking about not only swimming in a better way but more importantly how to impart that knowledge.Although written the book speaks to you and takes you step by step thru the learning process within which you must immerse yourself.Mindful effort goes beyond swimming but it is a nice place to start.Kudos Terry well done. This well written book is about swimming for the rest of your life. The method to swimming in a relaxed manner that requires less effort is contained in this book.
If you hang through the pages and pages of blah-blah, there is a solid introductory 'chapter' (spread across 200 pages) for beginners and those who struggle with traditional style swimming workouts. This material should be covered in a 25-30 pages tiny book with *more/better* sequence diagrams/pictures and clearly described/illustrated drills. Perhaps if the author was less concerned On the plus side, the concepts are good and the "advertising" enthusiasm of the author does make one wanting to get in the water. Swimmers may benefit from the basic elements and drills for them. If you feet are drugging, if your stroke is short, if distance swimming is a weak task for you, it is worth reading, but it will not be an easy (to get to what you want to read) read. In addition, I felt like I was watching a TV infomercial (about their DVD). However, there are many more swimming elements that this book does not cover. Repeated 'evidence' why *this* is 'great' (some bad/wrong).
I recommend it, along with the other total immersion books and videos. The method works. Get it and gain confidence in the water. This book is very helpful for anyone who wants to improve his or her swimming skills. It is clear, direct, and well written.
This morning I swam a half mile with energy to spare. The techniques in this book are intuitive and easy to follow.
Maybe, but I've never seen it and I spent a fair amount of time looking. Some people claim the technique is not novel and can be found other places.
I'm almost 60, a decent athlete but a poor swimmer. I swim three times a week.
Besides, having it all organized in one place is worth a few bucks. Three months ago I could only manage 2 lengths of freestyle and then I was gasping.
This book did it.
